Next to the “artsy” and very liberal vibe so typical for Austin, I also love the huge variety of dining possibilities the city has to offer. During my second trip there, I chose to try a few from the endless number of food trucks. With the growing popularity of these “bistros on wheels”, it is no surprise that they are nearly on every corner. Students, artists and basically anyone infected by this city’s colorful atmosphere has a choice of tacos, BBQ, fried chicken as well as authentic cuisine of foreign cultures, such as Indian food, Mediterranean, Japanese, Vietnamese… you name it, Austin’s got it!

Food_trucks_cous_cous_It is logical, that with the current trend of living “green” and going back to organic diet, many of these food trucks focus on providing healthy options, organic and raw foods as well as including vegetarian and vegan options on their menus. Many of these food trucks use local produce, supporting the community.

Torchy’s Tacos’ original food truck was definitely on my list of “must-eat-at” places. There are many locations now open across North Texas, with one of the newest in North Dallas (North Texas Tollway and W. Park Blvd.). Just like the founder of Torchy’s, Michael Rypka, the location opened with a personal touch, handing out free chips, and in this case, even free tacos that day. Torchy’s Tacos, in my opinion, are addictive. They taste great, fresh and are full of flavors. If you like spices, you will definitely enjoy their house-made Diablo Sauce. They also serve one of the best quesos I’ve ever had. If you request your tacos to be “trashy”, they will pour a small amount of the warm queso over them. Is your mouth watering yet?

Another admirable thing about this joint is that they give back. The company supports charities, especially ones focusing on cancer research, childhood enrichment (specifically Make-A-Wish Foundation) and many others. This company started in a very humble way, with lots of expectations, dreams and almost no funds, yet, they are willing to help as much as they can. In my opinion, it is very inspiring to see such a humane and caring approach. They are also eco-friendly. Torchy’s sells their own brand of “Damn Good Rain Water”, which is naturally filtered rain water, safe to drink, without the use of any chemicals. Eat this yummy while supporting a good cause and being environment-friendly? I’m definitely in! You should go try these “Damn Good Tacos” too! ~ TorchysTacos.com
