With so many “miracle” hair treatments available on the market today I thought I would take a few minutes and focus on the ones that have been around for literally, centuries. Hot oil treatments have been conditioning locks for as long as people have been growing hair. With so many natural ingredients to choose from, it was often easy to find oils to nurture the body, hair and scalp.
The first thing you need to know about these slippery serums is that not all oils are created equal. When choosing the right mixture for your hair a few key points need to be considered. Are you looking to simply condition your hair, repair split ends, tame a frizz or treat your dry scalp? Depending on your goal, different oils can help you get the results you need.
If you are opting for a fast, economical and easy oil treatment, then your best bet is to pick up a ready made package available at most beauty supply stores that require a simple warming process of hot tap water. This is by far the easiest and safest of the treatment options due to the fact that it doesn’t pose a risk of heat damage or burning. If you want to spend a little more time prepping your hair application, then there are pre-made combinations that may cost a little more and require actual heating, whether that be in the microwave or with hot water. These are a bit riskier considering they do pose the threat of burning, but when done correctly they can penetrate the harshest of hairs giving you a better result. The final option is to start from scratch. Yes, people are creating their very own oil treatments everyday. Whether you are using a coconut oil base or a combination of natural oils, from jojoba, avocado, olive, grape seed or argan oil, blending your own can be fun and exciting.
One thing to keep in mind is how often you should treat your hair. This varies based on the healthiness of your hair and its needs, but as a general rule of thumb you can apply these treatments as often as once a week. Personally, I have spent years in the salon abusing my hair with color and bleach causing it to dry out and become severely damaged. For those just starting an oil therapy regime who like myself, have put their manes through the ringer, I suggest once a week for the first month. That was what I chose to do and I was very pleased with the results. If your hair doesn’t require as extensive conditioning as mine did, start with every other week. This frequency should give you genuine results, while also keeping your healthy hair looking and feeling vibrant. Once you have restored your hair, then you can change up your treatment schedule to allow for periodic treatments and still get the full benefit of a healthy look.
When done correctly, hot oil treatments can be a Godsend, and if you have never actually tried one, then I highly recommend it. With so many products, options and price points, there is no reason that you can’t find the right treatment for your hair type. And guys, don’t let gender keep you from lathering up your locks. Both, men and women take advantage of these fabulous treatments! It is also a great stay-at-home spa night activity you can do as a couple. Like I said before, these are all natural oils that compliment and condition the body, hair and scalp.
