If you have never used highlighter before you are in for a treat. The purpose of highlighter is to enhance your features in the best way possible. Highlighters do this by bouncing light off of your face to give you that radiant glow. It’s like a soft focus filter for the entire face if you use the product correctly. Many people are unsure of what highlighter to choose. Here are some perfect tips for choosing the right highlighter for your skin tone.
Picking Between a Cream or Powder Highlighter
Before you even decide on the right shade of highlighter for you, think about whether you prefer a cream or powder formula. Cream formulas can come in a compact, or in liquid form similar to a lotion. Many people with normal to dry skin prefer a cream based formula. Keep in mind that doesn’t mean the highlighter is going to contain oil. Many formulas are going to be oil-free anyway, so just check the packaging to make sure it is, if that is important to you in considering your skin type.
For people with oilier skin, you probably want to stick to a powder formula because it will last longer on your skin. Cream formulas tend to slide off the skin, so having a powder to absorb some of your oil will help.
Determine Your Undertone From This Trick
Next you want to figure out the undertone of your skin. What that means is do you have a warm or cool undertone? Warm skin tends to radiate yellow, olive, or a deeper tan undertone. Cool skin tend to run more pink, or reddish underneath. If you are having a hard time deciding, here is a good indicative test. Think about silver or gold jewelry. Which looks better on your skin? Warm skin usually looks better with gold, and cool skin falls towards silver.
These Highlighter Shades Are Best For Each Undertone
If you have a warmer undertone to your skin, you want to look for a highlighter that is gold, champagne, or tan (yellow) based. For cooler skin look for a pink, silver, or pearl (white) highlighter. A great warmer highlighter to try is Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Palette ($42). This palette has three warmer shades that are powder based to use on the cheekbones, under the brow, the cupid’s bow, and a little on the top of the forehead. This will brighten up your face considerably with a natural glow.
For cool skinned girls you want to try Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Rose ($46). This compact is made up of five different pink toned shades that will reflect the light when placed on the skin in the right places.
Playing around with a highlighter is going to enhance your daily look quite a bit. Once you get used to using one, you’ll be amazed at the compliments you’ll receive on your skin. Highlighters are makeup’s secret face lift!
